What an Nrf2 activator does
A classic antioxidant, like vitamin C, neutralizes a free radical and is used up. An Nrf2 activator works one step earlier: it releases Nrf2 so the cell itself makes more of its protective enzymes: HO-1, NQO1 and the ones that build glutathione. The effect is your own defense turned up, not an outside antioxidant that runs out.
The compounds that switch Nrf2 on
- Carnosic acid (rosemary) binds KEAP1 directly and frees Nrf2 (PMID 17995931). In GNM-X.
- 6-shogaol (ginger) raised Nrf2 and the antioxidant defenses of human skin cells (PMID 32429495). In GNM-X.
- Luteolin (Sophora japonica) activates the Nrf2 pathway and its enzymes (PMID 34439516). In GNM-X.
- Sulforaphane (broccoli) forms when raw broccoli or its sprouts are chewed; cooking lowers it.
- Curcumin (turmeric) is poorly absorbed on its own; tetrahydrocurcumin, the form the body uses, is in Activz Optimend.
